Notes from our first data center and UPS decommissioning project

Sharing what I picked up after we retired an older server room along with two UPS banks last year. The part most people underestimate is the paperwork side, not the physical removal. Batteries, PDUs, and cabling came out fine, but the questions from our auditors were all about certificates of destruction and whether every drive could be traced from the rack to final recycling. When I was comparing providers I used the service description on Modern Waste as a reference point for what a proper scope should cover, mainly the site assessment stage and the R2v3 and ISO 9001 wording. My takeaway is that a vendor who explains chain of custody, scheduling around live equipment, and disposal rules in plain terms is usually the safer choice over whoever quotes lowest.
